It’s hard to believe that we welcomed our sweet Emery into the world just 6 weeks ago. So lets reminisce a little! It was the night of Easter, the whole family was pooped after a long day, and it was around midnight when I started have some contractions. I told myself, “You still have 4 days until your due date, so this isn’t real labor.” I tried to force myself to sleep, until they only got stronger. After hours of contracting every 2 minutes, I woke my hubby up, Jeremy, and told him it was time to go to the hospital. I couldn’t believe our little one was about to be coming into the world….we had so much to get done, but I was focused on the fact that sweet Emery was going to be here soon. I was admitted and checked by the midwife at UIC. I was bummed to hear that I had only dilated to a 2. You see, I was attempting a VBAC2 so I needed to labor as long as I could on my own without medical intervention, in hopes of avoiding another c-section. The pain was so strong that I decided to go with the epidural. I was progressing well with strong contractions every 2 minutes apart that the midwife was concerned if the baby could handle even closer contractions once they broke the water bag. The staff at UIC was amazing and made us feel beyond comfortable. I was so grateful to have the opportunity to labor vs being scheduled for a 3rd c-section. It was encouraging to hear from them that it was their desire for me to have a successful VBAC. However after a few hours my midwife’s concern became a reality…just seconds after the water bag broke, Emery went into distress. Her little heart rate dropped to 60, and before I knew it, a whole team of midwives and doctoors were in my room moving me around, trying to get her heart rate back up….but it didn’t. In that moment I had peace, a peace that surpassed all understanding. My nurse told me, ” Jasmine, all you have to worry about is breathing and we will take care of the rest,” as they wheeled me into the operating room for an emergency c-section. And it was in that moment that I took deep breaths and clinged onto God. I prayed, and calmly asked the Lord to protect my little one……and within seconds her heart rate was back to normal. Emery Mei Lopez entered the world on April 6th weighing 6 lbs 1 oz and 19inches long. This is only the beginning of her story, and I look forward to love, teach and help mold her into the beautiful girl that God would have her to be. Until then, I will choose to take it day by day….
